PostSubject: Black Sabbath   Sat Jun 22, 2013 12:30 pm

Black Sabbath’s 13 has reached the #1 position on the album charts in Canada, the United States, the UK, Denmark, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, New Zealand, and Sweden . I personally have been listening to 13 nonstop since I got it on June 12, 2013. I’m listening to it as I write this. I might add with a very happy grin. Sabbath is back with a vengeance!

Has it really been 35 years since the original Black Sabbath line-up of Ozzy Osbourne, ‘Geezer’ Butler and Tony Iommi (unfortunately drummer Bill Ward opted out due his not receiving a ‘signable contract’) last released an album? Has it really been 34 years since Black Sabbath (with Ozzy) imploded from within due to the combination of alcohol abuse, drug abuse and supersized egos? Yes; to both questions. Judging from 13, though, it doesn’t sound that way…

13 recreates the classic ‘Sabbath sound’ of the musical tritone (known as ‘The Devil’s Interval’); tuned down guitars; slow plodding rhythm and riffs with a timing change to speed up the tempo later in the song; and blistering guitar solos. 13 fits neatly within the catalogue of Black Sabbath albums of the 1970’s. The band members also returned to their song writing habits of their first incarnation: Tony (‘the riff master’) wrote the majority of the music, Ozzy wrote the vocal melodies, and Geezer wrote the lyrics. The subject matter of the songs also has not changed: despite an association with occult and horror themes songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war were composed past and present. Sabbath always had a ‘social awareness’ and weren’t afraid to identify the problems plaguing society and who was responsible. Couched in the stark terms of good and evil and/or God and Satan, Black Sabbath has been misidentified variously as devil worshippers and other such nonsense. They just made a lot of people uncomfortable with their uncompromising attitude.

Black Sabbath have influenced an impressive list of  bands including: Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Nirvana, Korn, Mayhem, Venom, Judas Priest, Guns N’ Roses, Body Count, Alice In Chains, Anthrax, Disturbed, Death, Opeth, Pantera, Megadeth, Smashing Pumpkins, Slipknot, Foo Fighters, Fear Factory, Candlemass, Godsmack and Van Helan. Two gold selling tribute albums have been released, Nativity In Black Volume 1 & 2, including covers by Sepultura, White Zombie, Type O Negative, Faith No More, Machine Head, Primus, Raven Lord, System of Down and Monster Magnet.-Wikepedia

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian said "I always get the question in every interview I do, 'What are your top five metal albums?' I make it easy for myself and always say the first five Sabbath albums." Lamb of God’s Chris Adler said: "If anybody who plays heavy metal says that they weren't influenced by Black Sabbath's music, then I think that they're lying to you. I think all heavy metal music was, in some way, influenced by what Black Sabbath did." Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford commented: "They were and still are a groundbreaking band..you can put on the first Black Sabbath album and it still sounds as fresh today as it did 30-odd years ago. And that's because great music has a timeless ability: To me, Sabbath are in the same league as the Beatles or Mozart. They're on the leading edge of something extraordinary." On Black Sabbath's standing, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello states: "The heaviest, scariest, coolest riffs and the apocalyptic Ozzy wail are without peer. You can hear the despair and menace of the working-class Birmingham streets they came from in every kick-ass, evil groove. Their arrival ground hippy, flower-power psychedelia to a pulp and set the standard for all heavy bands to come." Phil Anselmo of Pantera and Down stated that "only a fool would leave out what Black Sabbath brought to the heavy metal genre".-Wikipedia

In addition to being pioneers of heavy metal, they also have been credited for laying the foundations for heavy metal subgenres stoner rock, sludge metal, thrash metal, black metal, doom metal as well as for alternative rock subgenre grunge. According to the critic Bob Gulla, the band's sound "shows up in virtually all of grunge's most popular bands, including Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains". Black Sabbath were also one of the earliest to turn gothic music into a genre.-Wikipedia

Here's the second single of the album that debuted on 15 May in a CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode:
End of The Beginning

Question: Why is
End of The Beginning appropriate for CSI?

At some time or other, a believer's faith is shaken by the realities of the world we live in and the horrors it contains. They are forced to confront the question:

God Is Dead?

I once had all Black Sabbath albums of the Ozzy period and the first two with Dio on vinyl. I then recorded them on to cassette so I could listen to them in the car. Now I have them all on CD. Black Sabbath is definitely in the top 5 of my all time favourite bands.

Edited for bad grammar (as usual).
